چکیده
Reverse osmosis (RO) and electrodialysis (ED) are the two most important membrane technologies for water desalination treatment. Their transport mechanisms very different, but on a closer look also have many similarities. In this tutorial review, we describe state-of-the-art theory both processes, focusing simple examples that helpful non-specialist classroom teaching. We relevant ion coupling with chemical mechanical equilibrium membrane/solution interfaces. For RO of neutral solutes, explain solution-friction (SF) model which is closely related to classical sieving or pore flow model. The SF includes advection, diffusion, solute partitioning, leads relationships coupled fluxes solutes (and thus retention as well), when diffusion boundary (or concentration polarization) layer included in Subsequently extended symmetric salt solutions charged membranes. solutions, ED present two-dimensional module-scale calculations lead characteristic curve determines optimum operational conditions based cost calculation offsets energy material costs. discuss two-fluid (TFM) comprehensively describes ED, how accurately experiments where ions transported opposite directions through membrane. Finally, results optimization studies combination multiple modules evaluate relevance polarization by using 3D cross-current an module.

Use of electrodialysis and reverse osmosis for the recovery and concentration of ammonia from swine manure.
This project aimed at producing a concentrated nitrogen fertilizer from liquid swine manure using electrodialysis (ED) and reverse osmosis (RO), as a mean to help resolve the excess nutrient problem faced by many swine producers, and offer an alternative to chemical nitrogen fertilizer production. Different types of ED membranes were evaluated based on the NH4+ transfer rate, current efficiency...
متن کاملDesalination/concentration of reverse osmosis and electrodialysis brines with membrane distillation
Brines produced by desalination processes such as reverse osmosis (RO), electrodialysis reversal (EDR) and ion-exchange (IX) holds pollution potential for the water environment if not properly handled. These brines contain a high water content (95–98%) and chemicals that could possibly be recovered for reuse. Therefore, direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) which has the potential for wat...
متن کاملHybrid electrodialysis reverse osmosis system design and its optimization for treatment of highly saline brines
The demand is rising for desalination technologies to treat highly saline brines arising from hydraulic fracturing processes and inland desalination. Interest is growing in the use of electrical desalination technologies for this application. The hybridization of electrodialysis (ED) with reverse osmosis (RO) allows high salinities (beyond the range of RO alone) to be reached while avoiding the...

With the increasing installed capacity of desalination, the greenhouse gas emission for generating the required energy to power the desalination plants is also becoming the focus of attention in the world community. Domestic reverse osmosis membranes have been very successful technology especially in the developing world to provide safe drinking water. The novel concept of photovoltaic powered ...
متن کاملComparison of energy efficiency and power density in pressure retarded osmosis and reverse electrodialysis.
Pressure retarded osmosis (PRO) and reverse electrodialysis (RED) are emerging membrane-based technologies that can convert chemical energy in salinity gradients to useful work. The two processes have intrinsically different working principles: controlled mixing in PRO is achieved by water permeation across salt-rejecting membranes, whereas RED is driven by ion flux across charged membranes. Th...
